Hawaii Business Tax Filing Deadlines: What Oahu S-Corp and C-Corp Owners Need to Know

Running a business in Oahu means managing customers, employees, cash flow, vendors—and taxes. One of the easiest things for a busy business owner to overlook is an important business tax filing deadline.
For Hawaii S Corporations and C Corporations, understanding the difference between federal and Hawaii filing requirements is essential. Missing a deadline can result in penalties, interest, unnecessary stress and potentially avoidable tax problems.
S Corporation Tax Filing Deadline
For a calendar-year S Corporation, the federal income tax return is generally filed using Form 1120-S. The federal deadline is the 15th day of the third month following the end of the tax year. For the 2025 tax year, the normal deadline was March 15, 2026. Because March 15 fell on a Sunday, the deadline moved to Monday, March 16, 2026.
Hawaii S Corporations also have state filing requirements, including Form N-35, S Corporation Income Tax Return. For a calendar-year taxpayer, Hawaii's regular corporate income tax filing deadline is generally April 20.
An extension may provide additional time to file, but business owners should understand an important distinction: an extension to file is generally not an extension to pay taxes that are due.
C Corporation Tax Filing Deadline
C Corporations generally file federal Form 1120. For a calendar-year C Corporation, the federal return is generally due on the 15th day of the fourth month after the end of the tax year.
For the 2025 tax year, the federal calendar-year C Corporation deadline was April 15, 2026. Hawaii C Corporations generally file Form N-30, Corporation Income Tax Return, with the Hawaii Department of Taxation. For calendar-year corporations, the Hawaii deadline is generally April 20.
Businesses with fiscal years may have different deadlines, so business owners should not assume that the calendar-year dates apply to every company.

What Happens If Your Business Missed the Deadline?
A professional tax review can help determine which federal and Hawaii returns are required, whether an extension was filed, whether payments were made, and what steps should be taken next. For some businesses, filing late may also reveal opportunities to correct bookkeeping issues, identify overlooked deductions or improve estimated tax payments going forward.
Hawaii S-Corporation Tax Planning
Tax preparation is only one part of good business tax management. Hawaii S Corporations may also want to evaluate whether the state's pass-through entity tax election could be appropriate for their particular circumstances. Hawaii permits eligible S Corporations to elect pass-through entity taxation, subject to specific requirements.
Because every business is different, this is an area where professional tax planning can be valuable. Entity structure, shareholder income, deductions, estimated taxes and the interaction between federal and Hawaii taxation should all be considered before making an election.
Rental Properties and Business Taxes
Many Oahu business owners also own rental properties or real estate investments. Rental income creates another layer of tax considerations, including income and expenses, depreciation, property-related costs, ownership structure and the interaction between business and personal tax planning.
Keeping business and rental-property records organized throughout the year can make tax preparation substantially easier and may help identify legitimate deductions and planning opportunities.
